Security Supervisor Training I

Purpose:

To provide initial supervisor training for all potential Level 1 supervisors in the company and all supervisors on government contracts.

Required Attendees:

All employees selected to become Level 1 supervisors or supervisors on government contracts before their promotion becomes final. Employees desiring promotion may request to voluntarily attend.

Completion Date Requirements:

Class must be completed prior to the employee assuming their duties as a Level 1 supervisor.

Completion Requirements:

  • Completion of 28 hours of study
  • Passing of Safety Test
  • Complete Sample Reports Accurately and Completely
  • Passing of a Comprehensive Final Exam
  • All test require a passing score of 80% or better

Supervisory Duties & Responsibilites 2.0 Discuss the basic duties and responsibilities of a contract supervisor guard. Discuss the importance of posts and proper coverage. Discuss filing of required reports in a timely and legible manner, posts and officers having proper equipment and post inspections. Discuss and provide a detailed overview of the responsibilities of a first-line supervisor and the importance of such.
Contract Requirements 1.0 Discuss and review contract requirements and the standards of performance for contractors, contract employees and the relationship of employees with key member of the contracting agency and other officials involved in the administration and operation of the contract. Review actual contracts so that the students become familiar with such contract to ensure proper performance by all employees and supervisors.
Methods & Theories of Supervision 1.0 Discuss various management theories and the basic principles involved so that the student understands the various methods of supervision that are available to accomplish the goals of a first-line supervisor.
Leadership Traits & Principles 1.0 Review and discuss basic leadership traits to include initiative, tact, dependability, bearing, enthusiasm, judgment, knowledge and loyalty. Discuss and review other key leadership principles that are critical to being a successful leader.
Effective Leadership 2.0 Discuss the importance of a supervisor being a good leader. Focus on the necessity of giving constant attention to countless details of personal behavior and personal relations with subordinates. Discuss the importance of setting the proper example including appearance, demeanor and job performance. Discuss gaining the respect of subordinates through knowledge, skills and abilities as well as leading by example.
Purpose & Use of Discipline 2.0 Discuss the purpose of discipline and the use of praise and criticism to encourage and motivate employees. Focus on the use of criticism with the intention of improving performance. Discuss the appropriate time for verbal and written discipline and the effects of both. Discuss proper procedures for issuing of written discipline.
Motivating Employees & Problems Solving Methods 2.0 Discuss methods used to motivate employees and improve the performance of those employees who are not performing at acceptable standards. Emphasis will be on the early identification of problem employees and methods that may be used to bring poor performance up to acceptable standards. Discussion will include problems related to alcoholism, illegal drug usage, and other related topics. Discussion will include motivation techniques, use of positive reinforcement, recognizing achievements and leadership styles and their impact on employee motivation.
Effective Written & Oral Communications 1.0 Discuss the problems encountered in both written and oral communication between supervisors and subordinates and methods to improve both. Lecture will include discussion of quantitative directives and the concept of asking while telling. Also included will be information on formal and informal communications and how the effective supervisor can use both to accomplish their mission as a first-line supervisor.
Customer Service & Public Relations 2.0 Discuss the importance of customer service and public relations and the supervisor’s role in such. Specifically discuss client customer service, interacting with law enforcement officials, interacting with fire departments, interacting with other government officials, interacting with the media, interacting with the public and general ambassadorial traits.
Scheduling Employees 2.0 Discuss scheduling problems and methods to use available personnel effectively to ensure coverage of all posts in a cost effective manner without using overtime. Include multiple practical application hands-on exercises.
Controlling & Responding to Incidents 2.0 Discuss the supervisor’s role in responding to incidents and what actions should be taken in different types of incidents that the supervisor is likely to encounter. Discuss taking command of the incident, command and control functions, tactical communications, getting appropriate help, types of emergency situations and safety issues.
Investigations & Techniques 2.0 Discuss and review situations where the supervisor will be required to conduct basic investigations and the procedures to be used. Specifically discuss use of force investigations, accident and injury investigations, employee complaint investigations, and investigation involving a 3rd party complaint. Review techniques and procedures to be used in conducting these investigations and what is expected out of the first-line supervisor in regards to their investigation. Discuss the importance of properly documenting everything done during the initial investigation.
Report Writing 2.0 Discuss the importance of proper report writing and submittal and review all reports that the supervisor might come in contact with. Use practical application exercises with real life scenarios to have the students practice the proper completion of reports. Discuss the importance of investigative reports along with the importance of reviewing subordinate reports to ensure completeness and legibility.
Human Resources & Employee Policies 2.0 Discuss the proper completion and procession of human resource related paperwork such as disciplinary notices, time off requests, employee file updates, etc. Discuss the importance of human resources in the company and the supervisor’s role in relation to this. Review the polices, procedures and supervisors responsibilities in regards to sexual harassment, discrimination and other employee related complaints or concerns. Discuss the proper procedures for employees to use in regards to human resource related issues including pay issues, benefits issues, requests, etc.
Safety 2.0 Discuss the code of safe work practices, OHSA and its role, OHSA and the supervisor, the impact of workplace accidents, procedures for workplace accidents, investigation of workplace accidents, fraud related to workplace accidents, hazard control and abatement and the supervisors role in safety.
Review 1.0 Conduct a question and answer session for any questions students may have in regards to any material covered.
Final Exam 1.0 Administer a 100 question comprehensive final exam to include 10 essay questions, 25 true-false questions and 65 multiple choice questions. This is a closed book exam.
