Basic Security Officer Training (BSOT)

Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to provide basic training needed to properly and safely accomplish their job in a professional manner.

Required Attendees:

All employees prior to promotion to Security Officer.

Completion Requirements:

  • Completion of 44 hours of study
  • Passing of First Aid/ CPR Exam
  • Passing of Chemical (Mace) Weapons Certification Test
  • Passing of Safety Test (85% or above)
  • Complete Sample Reports
  • Passing of Final Exam (85% or above)

Duties & Authority of the Security Officer (PTA) 3.0 1 Discuss the typical duties associated with being a contract security officer. Provide the officer with knowledge related to powers to arrest and authorities of the security officer. Discuss and use examples of potential situations and the proper actions of the security officer.
Trespass Law, etc. (PTA) 1.0 1 Discuss local trespass law and how it applies to the security officer. Provide the officer with knowledge related to local laws and how this affects the duties and responsibilities of the security officer.
Terrorism, Anti-Terrorism & Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) 4.0 1 Instructor will discuss domestic and international terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Discuss anti-terrorism methods used by FPS such as counter-surveillance and proper use of building security equipment.
Professional Public Relations Part 1: Overview 1.0 2 Instruction for the security officer in order to increase their effectiveness in the use of basic social skills, enhance their employer’s reputation and contract performance as well as the positive image portrayed by the government. Instruction in the proper display of the uniform, shoeshine, and grooming should be included in this section.
Professional Public Relations Part 2: Interactive Training 1.0 2 Role playing and other interactive methods between the instructor and students using scenarios relating to professional public relations based on the overview of this topic. Use of audio-visual materials, case studies and other materials to facilitate training objectives.
Ethics & Professionalism Part 1: Overview 1.0 2 Describe police professionalism today, including the expanding use of contract security officers and indicate by current trends where it may be headed in the future. Provide instruction in police ethics, using practical examples of both desirable and undesirable activity. Discuss ideas that will lead to improved cooperation between the local, state and Federal law enforcement officers and the contract security officers.
Ethics & Professionalism Part 2: Interactive Training 1.0 2 Role playing or other interactive instruction between instructor and students using scenarios of ethical and professional behavior by officers based on the overview of this topic. Sue of audio-visual materials, case studies and other materials to facilitate training objectives.
Report Writing & Records 3.0 2 Instructor will discuss the importance of properly prepared reports and records. Students shall be given examples and prepare sample reports and records as the will use within government contracts. Emphasis will be placed on effective report righting and tips will be discussed.
Observation & Documentation 1.0 2 Discuss techniques of observation and how it applies to the role of a security officer. Discuss the importance of proper observation skills and the need for proper and accurate documentation.
Safety & Fire Prevention 2.0 2 Define the contact guard’s responsibility for safety and fire prevention. Provide guidelines for operational safeguards including the use of fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and other standard fire prevention equipment. Discuss the types of fires and the appropriate response for the security officer in case of fire.
Evacuation Procedures/Natural Disasters 2.0 3 Discuss the procedures to be used in case of and evacuation of a facility or location. Discuss why evacuations may occur including civil disturbance, fire, natural disaster or a security breach. Discuss the dangers involved in evacuations and procedures to ensure an orderly evacuation.
Handling Difficult People (MOAB Introduction) 3.0 3 Discuss human nature and aggressive behavior in humans. Provide the security officer with general knowledge in how to identify aggressive behavior and verbally control aggressive behavior.
Use of Force 1.0 3 Instruction will be given on the use of force to include the various degrees of force authorized in the performance of their duties under contract. Reporting procedures related to such use of force will be discussed as will the consequences of the unauthorized or misuse of force.
Principles of Communication Part 1: Overview 2.0 3 Familiarize the contract security officer with the concept surrounding effective communications and development of communication skills. In meeting this objective, the contract security officer is presented with the theory of communications; various types of obstacles which can hinder the development and maintenance of effective communication; the senses and their role in the communication process and the main and essential skills which accompany the development of communication effectiveness.
Principles of Communication Part 2: Interactive Training 1.0 3 Role playing and other interactive methods between the instructor and students using scenarios of communication methods based on the overview of this topic. Use of audio-visual materials, case studies, and other materials to facilitate training objectives.
Use of Radios 1.0 3 Discuss the proper use of radios, communication protocols, the proper use of radio codes and appropriate radio language. Discuss care and testing of radios.
Crimes & Offenses 2.0 4 Present the contract security officers with an understanding of the types of offenses they are most likely to encounter in their duties. Discuss methods of successful investigative techniques.
Search & Seizure 1.0 4 Provide the security officer with the knowledge of the legal application of search and seizure law in the performance of duties as a contract security officer at a government facility. Instruction will provide a comprehensive survey of laws pertaining to search and seizure to include “stop and frisks”.
Liability Issues in Security 1.0 4 Discuss liability issues in the security industry including personnel injury, wrongful detention, false imprisonment, violation of civil rights, workers compensation and other general liability issues. Provide examples of conduct that could present a liability for the officer and their employer.
Use of Mace/Pepper Spray 2.0 4 Lecture and hands-on demonstration of the proper use of mace/pepper spray to include; when it is appropriate to use, the escalation of force, how to properly deploy the weapon and actions to be taken after use including first-aid and reporting of the incident.
General Safety 2.0 4 Discuss the code of safe work practices, OHSA and its role, the impact of workplace injuries, reporting of work related injuries, procedures for workplace injuries, and the security officers safety related obligations.
