De-escalation of Aggressive Behavior and Use of Force

Purpose:

To provide the student with and in-depth knowledge of human behavior, aggressive behavior, escalation of force, escalation of force and techniques to handle these types of situations.

Required Attendees:

As determined by management based upon post.

Completion Requirements:

  • Completion of 40 hours of study
  • Pass Comprehensive final Exam (80% or better)
  • Pass Mace/Chemical Weapons Test
  • Pass Baton Certification Test
  • Pass Practical Application Test of Restraint Techniques
  • Pass Practical Application Test of Defensive Techniques

Introduction – Violence in Society 1.0 Lecture and overview of types of violence in society and its impact.
Use of Force 1.0 Lecture and discussion on the use of force and its appropriateness in a multiple of situations as well as the necessity to use force in certain situations.
Escalation of Force 1.0 Lecture and discussion on the proper escalation of force from non-aggressive verbal confrontation all the way through lethal force including alternate non-lethal methods such as Taser, bean bag shotguns, etc.
Legal Liability Issues 2.0 Lecture and discussion with the use of case law relating to legal liability issues as a result of the use of excessive force and its implications on the business or department.
Understanding Human Behavior 6.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application in the understanding of human behavior including what causes aggression and verbal methods to de-escalate potentially violent situations.
Restraints 3.0 Practical application in the use of restraints to control a physically aggressive person. One and two person restraints will be used.
Defensive Tactics 5.0 Practical application in defensive tactics to protect oneself form hostile and/or violent situation including one attacker, multiple attackers and attackers with weapons.
Handcuffing with restraints and defensive tactics 4.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application on the use of handcuffs (all types) and their use in conjunction with restraints and defensive tactics
Mace/Chemical Weapons 2.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application on the use and limitations of mace, pepper spray and other chemical weapons for both personnel protection and crowd control.
Baton 8.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application in the use, limitations and risks of ASP batons.
Handcuffing 1.0 Discussion and practical application in when to use handcuffs, how to use handcuffs and handcuffing techniques including handcuffing from restraint techniques.
Fire Safety 1.0 Lecture and practical application in the safe handling of firearms that have been taken away from aggressive individuals.
Reports 2.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application on the importance of reports when related to incidents involving force, their use in the court system (both civil and criminal), review of well written reports and sample report writing.
Safety 1.0 Lecture and discussion on the importance of safety in all situations and the impact of unsafe actions on the agency or business.
Review 2.0 Lecture, discussion and questions on all subject matter covered in preparation for the final exam.
Final Exam – written and practical application 1.0 A comprehensive final exam of 50 questions to include 30 True/False, 25 Multiple Choice, 5 Short Answer and the demonstration of all restraint and defensive tactics taught.
