Loss Prevention Training

Purpose:

To provide the entry level training needed for plain clothes, in-store loss prevention officers to effectively operate and carry out their duties.

Required Attendees:

All employees selected to become Loss Prevention before their promotion becomes final. Employees desiring promotion may request to voluntarily attend.

Complete Attendees:

  • Completion of all 24 hours of study
  • Passing of Driver Evaluation
  • Passing of Final Exam (80% or better)

Introduction to Loss Prevention 2.0 Lecture and discussion on the definition and role of loss prevention. The aspects of a loss prevention program and its effect on reduction of theft, both internal and external. Emphasis to be on the role of loss prevention agents and their duties.
Legal Powers & Limitations 1.0 Lecture and discussion on the powers of a loss prevention agent including the retail merchants law, powers to arrest, powers to interrogate, powers to search, etc.
Civil & Criminal Liability 2.0 Lecture and discussion including case law on the legal liabilities of loss prevention including personnel injury, slander, illegal search and seizure, false imprisonment and unjust interrogation.
Criminal Law 1.0 Lecture on the applicable criminal laws in relation to loss prevention including theft, robbery, etc.
Responsibilities of the in-store Loss Prevention Officer 1.0 Lecture and discussion on the specific duties and responsibilities of the in-store loss prevention officer.
CCTV Monitoring & Use 2.0 Lecture and discussion on the use of CCTV monitoring systems in the loss prevention field, proper monitoring and their advantages and disadvantages.
Surveillance Methods & Working the Store 3.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application in surveillance methods, both covert and overt, and procedures for “working the store” to locate potential suspects and properly monitor their activities.
Radio’s & Communication Procedures 1.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application on the use of various types of radios and communication equipment including codes, etc.
Elements of a Theft 1.0 Lecture and discussion on the elements of a theft to ensure successful prosecution in a criminal court.
Stops, Detentions & Arrests 1.0 Lecture and discussion on proper and improper stops, detentions and arrests inside and outside the store including posit policies.
Searching Suspects 1.0 Lecture and practical application on proper methods to search suspects and/or personnel property such as purses, bags, etc.
Investigations 2.0 Lecture and discussion on the basics of conduction and investigation including interrogations, interviews, protection of crime scenes, photos, etc.
Interviewing Suspects 1.0 Lecture and practical application in the interrogation/interviewing of suspects including proper and improper questions, leading questions, etc.
Control of Aggressive Behavior 6.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application in the control of aggressive behavior though both verbal communication and physical restraints.
Handcuffing 2.0 Lecture and practical application on the use of handcuffs and there proper use without causing injury to the officer or suspect including handcuffing suspects in physical restraints.
Reports, Statements & Photographs 4.0 Lecture, discussion and practical application in the importance of reports and photos, review of well written reports, review of photo techniques and sample report writing and photo taking.
Court Appearances & Procedures 1.0 Lecture and discussion on court appearances, proper preparation and the importance of such hearings to include standard court procedures.
Guidelines for Prosecution 1.0 Lecture on the legal guidelines for the prosecution of suspects.
Emergencies in the Store 2.0 Lecture and discussion on procedures of emergencies in the store to include power outage, bomb threats, fire, natural disaster, etc.
Lost Children 1.0 Lecture and discussion on procedures for handling lost children in the store.
Other Duties 2.0 Lecture and discussion on other duties or situation that may arise and how to handle them including fights in the store, armed robbery, etc.
Safety 2.0 Lecture and discussion on safety including OHSA, code of safe work practices, the importance of safety, the effect of workplace injuries, etc.
Review 1.0 Review of material covered including a question and answer session.
Final Exam 1.0 A comprehensive final exam of 25 True/False, 25 Multiple Choice and 5 Short Answer.
